It's not fancy, it's rather a place of common plants. Last spring we we were looking for the Elizabeth Taylor rose and the Karl Lagerfeld rose. The blank look on the faces of the staff made feel they were not well prepared in the land of horticulture. We settled on a lesser variety. My wife and I came back this spring looking for lavender plants. We found two and happy about this. Truth be told, I find this place a common resource, of predictive average.

I like this nursery. It's one of the smaller Hewitt's locations, but they always have a good selection and the plants are well taken care of so you're buying anything that's been stressed. The staff are always very friendly and helpful.

The manager, 'Jason' I believe, is an unprofessional and incompetent man. It's no wonder he gets so many bad reviews here... I wish I read them before making the trip. The Glenmont store he manages is disgusting and it clearly reflects Jason's own level of hygiene. I was browsing the lovely perennials, but couldn't go more than a couple paces without having to step over spit up tobacco chew on the ground. I came to the conclusion that it was Jason because later I witnessed him angrily talking to a customer and spitting chew on the ground while in ACTIVE conversation with said customer, he seemed to have little patience for any question unrelated to the location of an item. Unbelievable. I say the store is filthy because if you look close you can see mouse excrement on leaf bags, on the ground and on merchandise as well. I came here during the winter and saw poop on those little santas. Mold can be seen around the store, on the walls and ceilings. It's clearly been an issue for a while, I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't even notice it. The inventory seems decent but the place is clearly falling apart. For 25 years I have over paid a few bucks here or there for fertilizer or commercially produced bagged items while also purchasing thousands in landscaping to support Hewitts. Today, Monday wasn’t busy. Myself and one customer. I purchased $400 worth of shrubs and various compost, fertilizer etc. The store was more than staffed, several men and women working in the landscape area, but no offer to assist. One man did however make sure he wrote the green slip for 6 forsythia in my wagon. And then he watched me wheel that wagon to the front, and watched me return to where he was still standing and get the second wagon full of plants and then watched me wheel that one to the front also. Not busy, standing around with the 4 other employees. Not a hose in their hand, no moving landscape. Standing. Watching a 60+, 5’ tall, 100 lb lady loading and wheeling around landscape. Chatting, phone checking. I went in and paid the cashier with a pixie cut. She could not seem any less friendly. In my head I rationalized that maybe she was having a bad day. This tells you how unfriendly she was; as a customer I was expending mental energy wondering why the Hewitt’s employee seemed annoyed with me

Hewitts Garden Center Glenmont was a letdown, especially for a holiday purchase. I was overcharged for my Christmas tree. The price discussed was not the price that showed up on the bill, and no one could explain the difference. Checkout was a mess. I couldn’t even leave a tip, and the cashier seemed higher than a kite—completely confused and unable to understand basic questions about the bill or tipping. They actually have decent pricing overall, which makes this worse. When you say one price and then charge another, that’s just disrespectful to the customer. Final verdict: Good inventory, poor execution. Pricing transparency and basic competence at checkout need serious improvement, especially during the holidays when people are spending real money and expect professionalism.
